A lecture by Jiang Xueqin, the Chinese-Canadian professor behind the YouTube channel Predictive History, is gaining massive attention online after he predicted that the United States would lose a war against Iran.
The prediction was originally made during an online lecture in 2024, but the clip has recently resurfaced and spread rapidly across social media as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to simmer.
In that lecture, Jiang made three major forecasts. He suggested that Donald Trump would return to power, that a conflict between the US and Iran could follow, and that such a war would ultimately end badly for Washington. With the first two predictions now widely discussed online, many social media users have begun referring to him as "China's Nostradamus."
Who Is Jiang Xueqin?
Jiang currently teaches philosophy and history in Beijing and is a graduate of Yale College. Over the years, he has worked extensively on education reform and curriculum design in China.
Outside the classroom, Jiang has built a significant online following through his YouTube project Predictive History. In these lectures, he explores global trends and attempts to anticipate future events by studying historical cycles, geopolitical incentives, and game-theory dynamics.
His approach draws loose inspiration from the concept of "psychohistory," a fictional science created by science-fiction author Isaac Asimov in the Foundation series. The idea suggests that large-scale historical patterns can be analyzed to forecast future developments.
The 2024 Prediction That Sparked Debate
In a lecture recorded in May 2024, Jiang argued that if Trump returned to the White House, geopolitical pressures could push the United States toward a confrontation with Iran.
According to Jiang, a second Trump presidency could increase the likelihood of a military clash between the two nations. He warned that such a conflict might prove disastrous for the United States.
To explain his reasoning, Jiang drew comparisons from history. He likened a potential US invasion of Iran to the Sicilian Expedition during the Peloponnesian War, when Athens launched an ambitious military campaign that ultimately ended in catastrophe.
Jiang argued that Iran's geography and demographics could make a prolonged occupation extremely difficult. Mountainous terrain, extended supply lines, and strong domestic resistance, he said, could transform an early military success into a strategic failure.
What Jiang Said on a US News Show
Jiang recently discussed his views during an appearance on Breaking Points, a news and opinion program hosted by Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti.
During the conversation, he expressed concern about how the conflict could unfold.
"Given my analysis of how the war is progressing, I think that Iran has many more advantages over the United States," Jiang said. "Right now, it's essentially a war of attrition, and the Iranians have been preparing for this conflict for nearly 20 years."
He also pointed to what he described as previous military encounters that allowed Iran to study the strike capabilities of both the US and Israel. According to Jiang, that period gave Tehran time to evaluate tactics and prepare for future attacks.
The Role of Regional Proxies
Jiang also claimed that groups aligned with Iran, including the Hezbollah, Houthi movement, and Hamas, have developed strategies aimed at weakening American power.
He argued that these groups have studied American decision-making patterns and adapted their strategies accordingly.
