The assurance comes after concerns were raised over FIRs registered against protesters in several states during demonstrations demanding accountability and reforms in the examination system.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had called off its protest last month after receiving assurances that no adverse action would be taken against thousands of volunteers who had gathered in the heart of the national capital.

The protesters had been demanding action over paper leaks and wider reforms to make the examination system more transparent and accountable.

Government Says Commitment To Students Stands

Appearing before the SC, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said there appeared to have been some confusion over how the FIRs registered against protesters should be handled.

'There was some misapprehension or miscommunication about what to do with the FIRs against the protesters. I have instructions to say that the government is serious on that commitment to students,' said Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

Question Raised Over Withdrawal Of FIRs

Advocate Vrinda Grover sought clarity on whether the FIRs registered against the protesters would be withdrawn or quashed.

She stressed that the matter involved young students and also raised wider concerns about improving the country's education system.

'These are young people who have their lives ahead of them. Even for quashing, we have FIRs in Bihar, Bengal, Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. After this has been worked out with the states, we will come back to this court,' she said.

FIRs Registered Across Several States

The court was informed that cases involving protesters had been registered in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The issue will require coordination with the respective state governments before a final course of action is presented to the SC.

Mehta said the government would follow whichever legally permissible route was available to deal with the cases, while maintaining that it stood by its commitment regarding the students.
