CM Bhagwant Singh Mann leads push to boost healthcare infrastructure in Punjab

News24 Online 6 days ago

At the behest of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab government is committed to revolutionising the healthcare landscape of the state.

Reflecting their commitment, the State will witness the establishment of seven new medical colleges across Punjab.

This aspirational project, which received administrative approval for ₹274.75 Crore, includes the development of two government medical colleges, two institutions under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, and three through private and minority organisations.

Additionally, the Punjab Government has undertaken a comprehensive review of public infrastructure projects to ensure optimal utilisation of resources and greater public benefit. As part of this approach, the cost of the Hoshiarpur medical college project was significantly rationalised, from an earlier estimate of ₹550 crore to ₹274.75 crore, resulting in savings of nearly ₹250 crore. This reflects the government's emphasis on transparent governance, fiscal prudence, and directing public funds towards citizen-centric development.

Expanding upon this line of policy action, the state government is concentrating on the development of a health care network which can effectively bridge the gap between rural and urban landscapes. New institutes are being set up so that proper medical education and better health care facilities become available not only in the larger cities but also to people living in other areas of the state. Through such an initiative, it is hoped that the burden on patients in existing hospitals will be reduced.

This new policy further stresses the importance of blending technology with proper infrastructure. The institutes which are coming up will have the necessary infrastructure for conducting super- specialty treatments, diagnoses, and medical research, thereby making Punjab's medical system comparable to that of other states as well as other countries of the world.

Moreover, the government is working towards reinforcing its healthcare manpower pipeline by providing increased avenues for youths in the locality to undertake their training in the state itself. Through increased seat allocations and improved institutional performance, this strategy aims at retaining qualified personnel, minimising movement for further studies, and securing an adequate supply of skilled individuals in response to the rising demands of the state's healthcare sector.

This policy reflects CM Mann's commitment to bolstering health care and medicine-related educational facilities in Punjab. With plans expanded for more than one new college and upgrades in some existing institutions, Punjab will have many more MBBS seats to ensure a decrease in reliance on overseas medical education institutes. This would go a long way towards ensuring the provision of quality health care in the state and help in developing an autonomous health care setup.
