Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is incorporating technology for effective governance. Taking a concrete step to further streamline the crackdown against organised crime, the Punjab Police collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar to use AI-based systems to fight crime.
The move is aimed at creating a structured database of criminals and further bolstering the ongoing campaigns like 'Gangstran Te Vaar', 'Yudh Nashean Virudh', which will help the Punjab Police in busting gangster networks based inside and outside the state.
Under this partnership, the Bhagwant Singh Mann Government will employ AI tools to trace and track down criminal networks, using a database system, through the Punjab Police. Indian Institute of Technology Ropar and Dr B. R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences entered into an MoU under which AIMS Mohali is overseeing the project.
The initiative will allow Punjab Police to build a comprehensive and unified database of criminals by integrating both structured and unstructured data. This includes digitising scanned PDFs and handwritten crime records, ensuring that fragmented information is consolidated into a single system accessible instantly.
As part of this collaboration, IIT Ropar will provide high-tech software with data analysis, voice recognition, and dashboard-based monitoring capabilities to detect criminal activities in real time and intelligence-led policing to break gangster networks operating from overseas.
To improve the operation of the modern police force and enhance investigative speed, the project is designed to incorporate handwritten and scanned documents within an unstructured data source of police reports into an organized digital framework.
