French Open: Matteo Arnaldi gives walkover in semifinal due to., who will face Alexander Zverev in final?

News24 Online 2 weeks ago

Matteo Arnaldi withdraws from the French Open before playing his semifinal match against fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli. This gave Cobolli an automatic win to advance straight into the final.

Matteo Arnaldi was the most surprising player to reach the semifinals because he was ranked outside the top 100. He also spent a record-breaking 19 hours and 42 minutes on the court to make it to the final four.

Why did Matteo Arnaldi give a walkover?

The interesting thing was Arnaldi was the lowest ranked player to reach the semifinals at the French Open since 1997. He made it this far after a surprising and tough two weeks, where he spent nearly 20 hours playing on the court. But the Italian player, who is ranked 104th in the world, got sick due to a virus and will not play.

Speaking at a press conference, Arnaldi said: "It's difficult to be here, it's not what I wanted to do but last night I started to feel not very well. I woke up at 1 am and I started vomiting. I tried to sleep but I couldn't sleep at all. Around 6 or 7 am I woke up and vomited again and it was pretty bad. We called the doctor in the room, he came, gave me some stuff."

"I was hoping it could just be something from dinner but throughout the day I couldn't eat anything. It's tough because, for how the tournament was, how many hours I spent on court, I was actually feeling very good. To have to withdraw from a first grand slam semi-final is not something you wish on anybody. I feel sorry for everyone that came to watch us."

"Matteo Arnaldi is suffering from a virus and is not able to play his semifinal against Flavio Cobolli," a French Open announcement said. It also noted that fans who bought tickets will get their money back.

Who will face Alexander Zverev in the French Open Final?

Alexander Zverev will play Flavio Cobolli in the final this Sunday. The Italian player advanced automatically after his countryman, Matteo Arnaldi withdrew and we all know the walkover reason as mentioned in the above para. Zverev has won three out of the four times he has played against the 24-year-old Cobolli in his career.
