Major New Year's Eve Security Scare in Rajasthan: 150 kg ammonium nitrate and explosives seized in Tonk, two arrested

News24 Online 3 months ago

In a major security operation, the District Special Team (DST) of Rajasthan Police has seized a large quantity of explosive materials from a car in Tonk district.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the illegal transport of explosives, while the vehicle used for carrying the material has been seized.

The operation was carried out after the DST received specific intelligence inputs about the movement of explosives from Bundi district to Tonk. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the police laid a strategic roadblock and intercepted the suspect vehicle.

Roadblock Set Up After Intelligence Input

According to police officials, the DST team received information that a consignment of explosives was being transported illegally from the Karwar area of Bundi district towards Tonk. Based on this input, a naka (roadblock) was set up under the jurisdiction of the Baroni police station.

During routine checking, the DST team stopped a Maruti Ciaz car that matched the description provided by informers. The vehicle was thoroughly searched after raising suspicion.

Explosives Hidden in Fertiliser Sacks

Upon searching the car, the police recovered a significant cache of explosive materials cleverly concealed inside sacks of urea fertiliser. Officials said the method appeared to be used to avoid detection during transport.

The seized materials include:

  • 150 kilograms of Ammonium Nitrate
  • 200 high-intensity explosive cartridges
  • Six bundles of safety fuse wire, measuring approximately 1,100 metres

The recovery has raised serious concerns about the possible misuse of the explosives.

Two Accused Arrested, Vehicle Seized

The two men arrested have been identified as:

  • Surendra Patwa (48), son of Bhanwarlal, resident of Karwar, Bundi district
  • Surendra Mochi (33), son of Dulilal, resident of Karwar, Bundi district

Both suspects were taken into custody at the spot. The Maruti Ciaz car used to transport the explosives has also been seized as part of the investigation.

Police Probe Use and Supply Chain

Police officials said that intensive questioning of the accused is currently underway to determine where the explosives were headed and for what purpose they were meant to be used. Investigators are also trying to identify the source of the explosive materials and whether more people are involved in the supply chain.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a wider network operating behind the illegal movement of explosives.

Security Agencies on High Alert

Senior police officials said such recoveries highlight the need for strict vigilance and intelligence-based policing. The DST team has been praised for acting quickly and preventing a potentially dangerous situation.

Further investigation is ongoing, and more arrests may follow as the probe progresses.
