A Rajya Sabha MP serves for 6 years - one year more than Lok Sabha MPs, who serve for 5 years. One-third of its members retire every 2 years. Unlike the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha is never dissolved. That is why it is also called the permanent house of Parliament.
How much salary does a Rajya Sabha MP get per month?
After the 2025 hike, a Rajya Sabha MP receives Rs 1,24,000 per month as basic salary. Earlier, the basic pay was Rs 1,00,000 per month as per the 2018 revision.
The increase came under the Salaries, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Act, 2025. This salary applies to both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs.
How much daily allowance do Rajya Sabha MPs get?
Rajya Sabha MPs now get Rs 25,000 per day for attending Parliament sessions or committee meetings. Earlier, this was just Rs 2,000 per day. This allowance is paid 3 days before the session starts and 3 days after it ends. MPs must sign an attendance register to claim it.
What is the constituency allowance of a Rajya Sabha MP?
Every Rajya Sabha MP receives Rs 87,000 per month as constituency allowance during their tenure. This helps them manage expenses related to their constituency and public work.
How much office expense allowance do MPs get?
Rajya Sabha MPs get Rs 70,000 per month to run their offices and connect with voters. On top of this, they also receive:
- Rs 60,000 per month as office allowance

How much pension do former Rajya Sabha MPs get?
After retirement, former MPs receive a pension of Rs 31,000 per month, up from Rs 25,000 earlier. For every extra year of service beyond 5 years, they get an additional Rs 2,500 per month, increased from Rs 2,000.

What special powers do Rajya Sabha MPs have over Lok Sabha MPs?
Rajya Sabha MPs enjoy all common powers like making laws, amending the Constitution, and financial and executive powers. But they also have two special powers that Lok Sabha MPs do not have:
According to Article 249 of the Constitution, the Rajya Sabha may, by a two-thirds majority of the members present and voting, declare any subject on the State List to be a matter of national importance. Once the Rajya Sabha passes such a resolution, Parliament can enact legislation on that subject.
According to Article 312 of the Constitution, only the Rajya Sabha can pass a resolution with a two-thirds majority authorizing the Central Government to establish new All India Services. Unless the Rajya Sabha passes such a resolution, Parliament or the Government of India cannot establish any new All India Services.
