The 'Greater Nepal' controversy

Balen Shah drew significant attention when he displayed a map of 'Greater Nepal' in his office, showing several Indian regions, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, as part of Nepal. This move was widely seen as a response to a mural in India's new Parliament building depicting an 'Akhand Bharat' (Undivided India).

The map sparked intense debate between India and Nepal and added to discussions about bilateral relations. Shah's decision to showcase 'Greater Nepal' positioned him as a nationalist figure within Nepal, but also drew sharp criticism from India.

Bollywood film dispute

Balen Shah also made headlines in June 2023 for his objection to the Bollywood film Adipurush, starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan. A dialogue in the film stating that 'Sita is the daughter of India' offended Shah, who argued it was an attack on Nepal's cultural identity. Many in Nepal believe Sita was born in Janakpur, in southeastern Nepal.

Shah threatened to ban the screening of Adipurush and all other Indian films in Kathmandu until the dialogue was removed, signalling his determination to protect Nepali cultural heritage.
