Petrol Diesel Prices Today: Amid the disruption in global oil supplies, fuel prices in India remained stable on May 13. Petrol prices in Delhi continued to remain at Rs 94.77 per litre, while diesel prices also stayed unchanged.
However, with oil marketing companies reportedly facing under-recoveries of nearly Rs 30,000 crore every month, concerns are rising that petrol and diesel prices could increase in the near future.
Pressure on OMCs
Due to ongoing tensions in West Asia, crude oil prices are hovering around USD 100 per barrel. Although the government has already increased petrol and diesel prices once, oil marketing companies are still under significant pressure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also urged Indians to save petrol and diesel. He appealed to people to use electric vehicles in order to reduce the import bill and ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
Fuel Prices remain unchanged
Crude oil prices are rising due to tensions in the Middle East. Despite this, petrol and diesel prices in India have not been increased yet. The government has avoided any nationwide revision in fuel rates so far. This has provided temporary relief to consumers.
PM Modi's remarks sparks fears
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently appealed to people to reduce fuel consumption. He also advised people to avoid unnecessary gold purchases and use edible oil carefully. His remarks triggered discussions in the market. Many people saw it as a sign of growing economic pressure. However, the government has not announced any demand-control measures yet.
Government assures no fuel shortage
The Centre held a high-level review meeting to assess the situation. After the meeting, the government said there is no shortage of petroleum products in the country. Officials stated that India has enough fuel supplies at present. The government also said state-run oil companies are bearing heavy losses. This is being done to protect consumers from rising global crude oil prices.
