For nearly two decades, Shantanu Narayen has led Adobe as its chief executive officer. Born and raised in Hyderabad, Narayen is today considered one of the most influential executives in Silicon Valley.
His journey, from studying engineering in India to leading one of the world's most powerful technology companies, reflects the rise of a generation of Indian engineers who went abroad in the 1980s and went on to shape global tech firms.
Who is Shantanu Narayen
Shantanu Narayen was born on May 27, 1963, in Hyderabad into a Telugu Hindu family. His father ran a plastics business while his mother taught American literature. This blend of business exposure and Western literary culture created a unique environment during his upbringing in the 1960s.
He studied at Hyderabad Public School, the same institution attended by Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft. Narayen later earned a bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University College of Engineering, Osmania University.
Higher studies in the United States
Like many engineers of his generation, Narayen moved to the United States for advanced education during the mid-1980s. In 1986, he completed a master's degree in computer science from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. It was there that he met his future wife, Reni.
He later pursued further studies and earned an MBA from the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley in 1993. Narayen completed the MBA while working full-time, attending classes at night. The combination of engineering knowledge and business education later shaped his leadership style. Today, he lives in Palo Alto, California, with his wife and their two sons, Shravan and Arjun.
Early career in technology
After completing his master's degree, Narayen began his professional career in 1986 at Measurex Automation Systems. In 1989, he joined Apple, where he worked in product development roles until 1995, gaining valuable experience during a transformative period in the technology industry.
He later served in a director-level role at Silicon Graphics and went on to co-found the digital photo-sharing start-up Pictra Inc. in 1996.
Rise to leadership at Adobe
Narayen joined Adobe in 1998 as Vice President and General Manager of the company's engineering technology group. By then, Adobe's flagship products such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Illustrator had already become industry standards.
In 2005, he was appointed president and chief operating officer of the company. On December 1, 2007, at the age of 44, Narayen became the CEO of Adobe. A decade later, in 2017, he also took on the additional role of chairman of the board.
Salary and compensation
According to reports cited by GQ India, Narayen's total compensation for the financial year 2024-25 was about USD 52 million (around Rs 444 crore).
