Tamil Nadu Elections 2021: Upheaval in AIADMK as Sasikala leaves politics
Chennai: Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, there has been a big upheaval in the politics of Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, senior AIADMK leader VK Sasikala announced her retirement from politics.
VK Sasikala, the ex-chief of Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK, was released from jail in January. This time she was expected to contest the assembly elections.
In a printed letter released on Wednesday night, Sasikala, a close aide of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, the late J Jayalalithaa, wrote, "I have never been in power or office even when Jaya (J Jayalalithaa) was alive. She said, I am leaving politics, but I pray I wish that his party wins and his legacy goes ahead. ''
"I urge the AIADMK supporters to work together and defeat the opposition. I urge the party cadre to work to maintain their legacy," she added.
Sasikala stepped down as the party's chief after Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016.
Votes will be cast in 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu on April 6 in a single phase. The election results will come on May 2.
