'Trump is impatient, not one to mess around': US Vice-President JD Vance warns Iran over 'fragile' ceasefire

News24 Online 4 days ago

US Vice President JD Vance warned Iran on Wednesday called on Iran to demonstrate 'good faith' in order to secure an effective long term agreement.

Calling the ongoing ceasefire 'fragile,' he warned Tehran that President Donald Trump is "not one to mess around."

Speaking during a visit to Hungary, JD Vance noted that the short-lived ceasefire provides a narrow window for diplomacy, adding that the success of the agreement to ease West Asia tensions depends on negotiations with Iran.

"If the Iranians are willing in good faith…"

The Vice President, currently on a visit to Budapest, said that the Iranian leadership is willing to coordinate effectively with the American administration. "If the Iranians are willing in good faith to work with us, I think we can make an agreement," he said during his address. Vance, however, balanced this diplomatic overture, accompanied by a caution regarding the US President's resolve and desire for rapid results, stating, "He's impatient to make progress."

Vance on diplomatic push for peaceful talks

Vance further stated that the push for peaceful talks comes directly from the top of the US executive branch. "The President of the United States has told me, and he's told the entire negotiating team … go and work in good faith to agree. That is what he has told us to do."

At the same time, Vance delivered a sharp warning, stating, "They're going to find out that the President of the United States is not one to mess around." Meanwhile, he alleged that several Iranian officials are not acting in 'good faith' despite positive signals from others.

Trump's 14-day truce declaration

The US Vice President's remark comes after Trump's 14-day truce declaration. The ceasefire was offered on the condition that Iran facilitates a "complete, immediate, and safe opening" of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. In a post on X, Trump announced, "Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks."
