The Pakistani government recently accused jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's son, Kasim Khan, of trying to strip the country's GPS Plus status, under which it enjoys a relatively lower tariff on exports.

In his speech at a UNHRC summit in Geneva on Wednesday, Kasim raised concerns about his father's health and human rights. Known for keeping a low profile, Kasim's speech has placed him in the spotlight.

Following his controversial speech, Kasim has become a subject of intense discussion. On the sidelines 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, he urged the body to intervene and press the Shehbaz Sharif-led government for the immediate release of Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated in multiple cases since August 2023.

Who is Kasim Khan?

Kasim Khan is the younger son of Imran Khan and his ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith. According to reports, he was born on April 10, 1999, and grew up in the United Kingdom. He initially preferred to stay away from politics, but entered public view after his father's arrest in 2023. Kasim has an elder brother named Sulaiman Isa Khan. Their mother is said to reside with both brothers.

Kasim is the founder of the Mifu app, a UK-based influencer marketing platform, unveiled in 2023. He reportedly received his early education in London and later pursued his higher studies at the University of Bristol, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Islamic History.

Last phone call with Imran Khan abruptly cut

Kasim delivered an emotional and strongly worded statement at the summit, alleging that his father is being targeted for challenging the country's military influence over political affairs. He further added that months have passed, and his family members have had minimal contact with him. Their last interaction, he revealed, was a phone call that was abruptly cut off.

Concluding their address, Kasim said that he were forced to speak out despite not being politically inclined. He further stressed that his father's worsening health and prolonged detention left him with no choice, while urging the international body to take cognisance of the situation.
