Leema Rose Martin to contest from Lalgudi constituency

The Lalgudi constituency has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the DMK. By fielding Leema Rose Martin from this constituency, AIADMK appears to be preparing for a tough contest with the ruling party. The last time AIADMK won from this seat was more than two decades ago.

Leema Rose Martin recently joined AIADMK. After joining AIADMK, party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami appointed her as the joint secretary of the party's women's wing. Her entry into the election race has added new momentum to the contest in Lalgudi.

Family members active in different political parties

The political reach of the Martin family extends beyond Tamil Nadu. Leema Rose Martin's son Charles has launched his own party called Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) in Puducherry. His party is contesting two seats in alliance with the NDA. Although Charles has spent most of his time in Chennai, he now claims to have shifted his base to Puducherry. He says he wants to develop Puducherry like Singapore and Hong Kong.

However, his entry into politics has sparked controversy. According to reports, the ruling NR Congress had earlier objected to the inclusion of parties in the NDA alliance that are led by "non-Puducherry faces."

Some leaders argued that wealthy outsiders should not try to gain political power in the Union Territory.
There has also been criticism that Charles is acting as the BJP's "B team" to divide minority votes, an allegation he strongly denies. Charles says he left the BJP and formed his own party after he was not given a ticket.

Meanwhile, another member of the Martin family, Aadhav Arjun, is also politically active. He is Santiago Martin's son-in-law and currently serves as the general secretary of actor Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which is contesting elections in both Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

All about Martin Group

The Martin Group, owned by Santiago Martin, has also been under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate. According to reprots, the Group's annual lottery turnover is estimated at around Rs 15,000 crore. It had reportedly donated around Rs 1,300 crore to several political parties, including the DMK, TMC and BJP, through electoral bonds. In a statement issued in 2023, the company said Martin and his group firms paid Rs 23,199 crore in GST between July 2017 and Sept 2023, averaging Rs 5000 crore annually.
