Senior IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe has once again been transferred in Maharashtra. This is his 24th transfer in a 21-year career. Since joining the civil services in 2005, Mundhe has been known for his strict, independent work style.
He is often described as a "Singham"-like officer in the bureaucracy. He has now been appointed as Secretary in the disaster management, relief, and rehabilitation department.
Transfer Sparks Reactions
His transfer has surprised many people on social media. In August 2025, after becoming Secretary of the disability welfare department, he started verifying the documents of employees hired under the disability quota. The investigation found that several officials had used fake medical certificates to get jobs. Following this, the government suspended around 316 officials and employees. Mundhe also warned of criminal action and possible jail for those involved. He cancelled the registrations of nearly 900 fake NGOs that were misusing funds meant for people with disabilities.
Who Is Tukaram Mundhe?
Tukaram Mundhe is often compared to Ashok Khemka, another officer known for frequent transfers. He comes from Beed district in Maharashtra and was born on June 3, 1975, in Tadsone village. He joined the IAS in 2005. He completed his BA in History and MA in Political Science. He belongs to the Vanjari community, which is part of the OBC category.
Known for His Strict Image
Mundhe has built a strong image as an honest and tough officer. He has received awards like the "Waterman of Maharashtra" and is often called "a man on a mission." In his first posting in Solapur, he took action against illegal liquor operations. He has also cracked down on the sand mafia and has received threats for his work. He is married to Archana Mundhe and has a son and a daughter. He studied in a Zilla Parishad school and later completed his education in Aurangabad. Over the years, he has carved out a distinct identity within the bureaucracy through his honesty and strict approach.
