Eid al-Fitr, also known as Ramzan Eid or Meethi Eid, is one of the most important festivals in Islam. It marks the end of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.
Eid is a time for prayer, charity, and meeting family and friends. Across regions from Saudi Arabia to India, people prepare special food, wear new clothes, and visit loved ones.
Why do different countries celebrate on different days?
Eid does not have a fixed date in the modern calendar because it depends on the sighting of the new moon. The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, so the start of Eid begins only after the Shawwal moon is seen. Because countries are in different locations and have different weather conditions, the moon may be visible in one place but not in another. This is the main reason why Eid can fall on different days around the world.
Why Saudi Arabia and Gulf countries celebrate earlier
In countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and Oman, Eid is often celebrated earlier. This is partly because these countries may see the moon sooner due to their geographical position. In some cases, authorities also consider astronomical calculations along with physical sightings. Once the moon is confirmed, Eid is announced for the following day.
Why India and Pakistan celebrate a day later
In India and Pakistan, the tradition is to rely strictly on local moon sightings. Religious committees and scholars wait until the moon is physically seen in their own region. If the moon is not visible, the fasting month completes 30 days, and Eid is celebrated the day after. This is why these countries often observe Eid one day later than Saudi Arabia.
Chaand Raat, meaning "night of the moon", is the evening when people look for the new crescent. In South Asia, this night is full of excitement. Markets stay open late, people shop for clothes and sweets, and families wait eagerly for the announcement. If the moon is seen, Eid is celebrated the next day; if not, fasting continues.
When is Eid in 2026?
In 2026, Saudi Arabia and nearby countries are expected to celebrate Eid around March 20. In India and Pakistan, it is likely to be on March 21, depending on the moon sighting.
Although the date may differ by a day, the meaning of Eid al-Fitr remains the same everywhere. It is a celebration of faith, generosity, and togetherness, bringing people closer across countries and cultures.
