Will weekly chicken biryani be added to mid-day meals? CM Vijay plans big upgrade for government schools

News24 Online 1 week ago

The Tamil Nadu government is considering a proposal to serve chicken biryani once a week to students in government schools under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme.

School Education Minister Rajmohan has presented the idea to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The proposal is still under review, and no final decision has been made.

Rajmohan suggests adding chicken biryani

Speaking about the proposal, Minister Rajmohan said that every major government in Tamil Nadu has made improvements to the state's school meal programme.

He said former Chief Minister K. Kamarajar started the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, M. Karunanidhi added eggs to improve nutrition, M.G. Ramachandran expanded it into the Nutritious Meal Programme, and J. Jayalalithaa increased egg distribution throughout the week.

Rajmohan said he now hopes to continue that tradition by introducing chicken biryani once every week in government schools.

Proposal under CM Vijay's review

According to sources, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is currently examining the proposal. Officials said a final decision has not yet been taken.

If approved, the move would become one of the biggest changes to the school's meal menu in recent years and would aim to improve both nutrition and student attendance.

Tamil Nadu's long history of school nutrition programmes

Tamil Nadu has been one of the leading states in India when it comes to school nutrition programmes. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme was first introduced by former Chief Minister K. Kamarajar in the 1950s and has been expanded by successive governments over the years.

Each government has added new food items and improved the nutritional value of meals provided to students.

Breakfast menu may also get an upgrade

The state government is also planning to improve the existing school breakfast menu.

Minister Rajmohan said around ₹15 per student is currently spent on breakfast. He added that repetitive dishes such as wheat upma and rava upma could be replaced with healthier and more appealing food options to provide better nutrition for students.
