Rice is a staple on Indian dining tables, but not all rice is created equal. While most varieties are affordable and found easily in local markets, there is one premium rice in the world that carries a price tag high enough to surprise even food lovers.
In fact, the cost of a single kilogram of this exclusive grain can match the price of a new smartphone.
Which is the World's most expensive rice
According to CNN, Japan's Kinmemai Premium rice was recognised by Guinness World Records in 2016 as the most expensive rice in the world. It is not just the price that makes it special, but also the way it is grown, processed and presented.
An 840-gram box of Kinmemai Premium has been priced at around 10,800 Japanese yen, which roughly converts to Rs 6,000 - Rs 7,000. At the time of its launch, it reportedly sold for about 9,496 yen per kilogram (around Rs 9,800). In different markets today, its price can range between Rs 12,500 and Rs 15,000 per kilogram.
Why is it so expensive?
Kinmemai Premium is produced by Toyo Rice Corporation in Japan. The company says the rice is a carefully crafted blend of five top-quality rice varieties. Among them are award-winning strains such as Koshihikari and Pikamaru.
The seeds are sourced from some of Japan's finest rice-growing regions, including Gunma, Nagano and Niigata. Each region is known for producing high-grade rice with distinct flavour and texture.
What truly sets this rice apart is its lengthy preparation process. After harvesting, the grains are not rushed to market. Instead, they are aged for nearly six months. The company claims this resting period enhances both taste and texture.
Once aged, the rice undergoes a patented "buffing" process. This technique removes the outer layer of the grain while keeping important nutrients intact. The result is a polished grain that looks refined but still retains its natural goodness.
How different does it taste from normal Indian rice?
Reports suggest that when cooked, the grains shine almost like tiny crystals. People who have tasted it describe the flavour as slightly sweet with a rich, nutty touch. The texture is said to be creamy and smooth, almost buttery. Some even say it feels like it melts in the mouth.
Limited production, luxury appeal
Toyo Rice Corporation produces only about 1,000 boxes of Kinmemai Premium each year. Each box contains six small packs of 140 grams. In Japan, it is often purchased as a luxury gift rather than an everyday food item.
With such limited production and careful craftsmanship, Kinmemai Premium stands out as more than just rice it is treated as a gourmet experience.
