Deendayal Upadhyaya birth anniversary: Which govt schemes are named after him?

New Delhi: Soon after the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government came to power at the Centre in 2014, the Union Government and several state governments faced criticism for renaming and coming up with schemes named after Sangh Parivar stalwart, the late Deendayal Upadhyaya.

Born on September 25, 1916, in Mathura, Upadhyaya is credited with coming up with the idea of ‘Integral Humanism’, a set of concepts adopted by the Jan Sangh (the BJP’s predecessor) which formed the base of its ideology. His association with Jayaprakash Narayan and the Gandhian Sarvodaya movement mainstreamed the Jan Sangh, which was later part of a coalition government following the Emergency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is said to be influenced by Upadhyaya, mentioning him in various speeches since he assumed office in 2014. A number of Central and state government schemes have been named after him in the years since.
