President Droupadi Murmu expressed profound grief on January 31, 2026, following a fatal explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, which claimed the lives of 16 workers.
In a formal statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President extended her sympathies to the bereaved families, describing the loss as “deeply distressing.” She added, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
Vice President CP Radhakrishnan also offered condolences and prayed for the recovery of all injured individuals, stating, “The most heartbreaking accident that occurred in a fireworks factory near Virudhunagar causes immense sorrow. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this accident. I pray that all the injured recover fully soon.”
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin conveyed his condolences in a post on X. He stated, “I have requested the Ministers K K S S R Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to rush to the scene immediately to expedite and monitor the rescue operations and to offer solace to the affected families. Upon learning of this, I contacted the District Collector and instructed them to coordinate all necessary assistance.”
Senior police officials reported that the explosion occurred around 3 pm at a licensed firework unit called “Vanaja Fireworks” near Kattanarpatti. Following information received from the public, police and fire and rescue personnel responded promptly and commenced fire-dousing efforts. Rescue operations are ongoing, with injured persons transferred to a nearby government hospital.
The Vachakarapatti police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
