The Afghanistan Premier League (APL) is set to commence on December 27 this year, presenting a notable investment opportunity in the contemporary cricket landscape.
As franchise cricket expands globally, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) is launching a league centred on one of the sport’s most passionate fan bases, featuring exciting players and significant commercial potential. The tournament will take place in the United Arab Emirates and include five franchises representing key Afghan cricket regions: Kabul, Kandahar, Balkh, Paktia, and Nangarhar.
The ACB has invited investors, sports entrepreneurs, and commercial partners worldwide to participate in the franchise ownership process, with proposals due by June 30, according to a press release from the ACB.
Afghanistan’s progress in international cricket has been remarkable. The national team has emerged as a strong global competitor, while Afghan players have become prominent in leading T20 leagues worldwide.
For investors, acquiring a franchise means joining a movement with a broad supporter base within Afghanistan and its global diaspora. Early investment provides opportunities to establish team identities, develop commercial partnerships, build fan communities, and generate brand loyalty, potentially delivering long-term value.
With only five franchises available, ownership opportunities are limited. Those securing teams in this initial phase will have a significant role in shaping their franchise’s future and contributing to one of cricket’s newest professional ventures.
The ACB has collaborated with strategic partners to create a commercial model focused on sustainability, operational efficiency, and investor returns. Hosting the league in the UAE offers world-class venues, international broadcast infrastructure, premium production, and access to a large regional cricket audience. Combining Afghanistan’s increasing cricket talent and international players' participation, the APL is positioned to offer a competitive and commercially viable product from its inaugural season.
The league arrives at a time when global demand for cricket content is rising, with broadcasters, sponsors, and digital platforms seeking premium cricket properties capable of engaging audiences year-round.
The APL aims to provide opportunities for Afghan players, strengthen the cricket ecosystem within Afghanistan, showcase Afghan culture internationally, and support the growth of one of cricket’s rapidly developing nations.
ACB Chairman Mirwais Ashraf said, “The Afghanistan Premier League is a strategic step forward for Afghan cricket. Through the APL, we aim to establish a sustainable and globally recognised cricket property that showcases Afghan talent, attracts international investment, and contributes to the long-term growth of the game.”
For investors, the league offers limited franchise availability, a passionate fan base, internationally recognised talent, strong regional identities, and the chance to become founding stakeholders in a league with substantial growth potential.
In a competitive sports market, early-stage investment opportunities in national sporting properties are rare. The Afghanistan Premier League provides a chance to help build the future of Afghan cricket and participate in the development of an emerging and exciting league.
