Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle died on April 12 at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital at the age of 92, her doctor confirmed. Dr Prateet Samdani stated she had been suffering from multiple health issues and passed away due to organ failure.
Bhosle, whose career spanned over eight decades, is survived by her son Anand and grandchildren. Known for her versatile and prolific contributions to Indian cinema, she recorded songs in numerous languages. Her voice became emblematic of Bollywood’s golden era.
Her influence extended internationally, notably with the 1997 tribute song “Brimful of Asha” by Cornershop and collaborations with artists such as Boy George.
Following news of her death, members of the film fraternity expressed grief and paid tributes on social media. Actor Divya Dutta described her as a remarkable person and artist, writing, “You leave behind a legacy..of your songs, of the amazing person that you were, ill always remember my conversations with you …ill always cherish knowing you and the joy you gave us with your music…you live in our hearts #Asha taii..RIP @ashabhonsle ji…#legend.”
Actor Sidharth Malhotra expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle ji. Your legacy is woven into the fabric of our nation and I feel immensely grateful to have lived in the era of your magic. Thank you for music that soundtracked our lives today and every day. My prayers are with the family. Om Shanti.”
Actress Vidya Balan paid tribute by recalling one of Bhosle’s iconic songs, saying, “Mera kuch saamaan..tumhare paas pada hai” Aur hamesha rahega..Rest in peace Ashaji.” Actress Karisma Kapoor shared a throwback memory. Other celebrities including Sanjay Dutt, Sanya Malhotra, Shilpa Shetty, and Ayushmann Khurrana also mourned her passing and offered condolences.

Hits such as “Dum Maro Dum” and “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” are among her most acclaimed works. Her contributions to films including Teesri Manzil, Caravan, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Ijaazat, and Saagar remain iconic, while her work in Umrao Jaan, composed by Khayyam, is hailed as a career highlight.
