Assam CM says documents linking family to Dubai flats stolen from Scribd

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma denied Congress allegations linking his family to apartments in Dubai, stating on January 31, 2026, that the property documents were stolen from the document-sharing platform Scribd.

Sarma identified the actual owners as Md Ahmad and Fatima Sulaiman, calling the opposition’s claims a digitally manipulated “fake AI campaign.”

On X, Sarma wrote, “We have uncovered the real owners of the two Dubai apartments named during #CongFakeAICampaign. These flats are owned by Md. Ahmad and Fatima Sulaiman. Cong stole these documents from Scribd-https://scribd.com/document/769481891/May-Residence-Title-Deed#google_vignette. This is how we have found out, try on your own phones.”

Earlier that day, Sarma rejected Congress’s claims of overseas assets as “fake” and said the purported Dubai property documents showed “glaring inconsistencies and no authentic record.” He added, “All of their lies are THUS BUSTED. Legal action will follow.” Sarma also shared a link to verify his claim.

Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, addressed the issue in a response to Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on X. While Gogoi referenced the Dubai Golden visa as a long-term residence visa for investors, she replied, “Reading about tourism in Islamabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi. It seems to genuinely appeal to some couples.”

Riniki Bhuyan Sharma denied that she or her family hold assets or business interests abroad, stating, “Neither I, nor my children, nor my husband have any business interests or assets in Dubai or anywhere outside India.” She challenged Gogoi to disclose whether his wife has or has ever had a bank account in Pakistan and asked if he would make those details public.

She further criticised Gogoi, noting, “Also interesting how, within 24 hours, you’ve already climbed down from your claim of a ‘golden visa on an Egyptian passport’ to now talking about an ‘Indian passport.'”

The exchange followed Gogoi’s questions concerning alleged foreign assets and passport details of the Assam Chief Minister and his family.

Previously, Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged at a press conference that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma holds three passports and that the family has business interests worth Rs 52,000 crore in the United States. Sarma denied these claims and announced his intention to file a defamation case against Khera.

This political controversy has escalated ahead of the Assam Assembly elections slated for April 9 across 126 constituencies, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
