Bengal must be restored to Bengalis, says Nishikant Dubey on alleged illegal immigration

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday, accusing the party of eroding West Bengal's identity through the influence of 'illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators'.

He stated that the BJP is the sole option to remove them if it forms the government.

In an interview, Dubey asserted that the legacies of Bengal’s prominent figures, such as Maharishi Arvind and Syama Prasad Mukherjee, have been undermined by the TMC over the past 15 years. He emphasised: “Bengal’s identity must be restored, and Bengal must be handed over to Bengalis. Currently, Bengal is in the hands of Bangladeshis. Whether it’s Maharishi Arvind, Rajnarayan Bose, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Raja Ram Mohan Roy, or Bidhan Chandra Roy–the legacy of all these has been destroyed by the Trinamool Congress in the last 15 years.”

Dubey further claimed that “Bangladeshi infiltrators” have become the new face of Bengal’s legacy under the current administration and pledged that they would be expelled if the BJP came to power.

He traced the demographic changes to the 1950 Nehru-Liaquat Pact, stating: “The Delhi Pact between Nehru and Liaquat was signed on April 8, 1950, due to which the demography of the whole of Bengal, Assam, and Tripura changed. India became a secular nation, but Pakistan and Bangladesh became Islamic nations, leading to an influx of Bangladeshi Muslims here.”

He added: “To return that identity, the Bharatiya Janata Party is working with full force… If Bangladeshi infiltrators have to be kicked out, then the BJP is the only option. When our government is formed, Bangladeshi infiltrators will be out of here.”

According to official figures, West Bengal currently has 70,459,284 registered voters, down from 76,637,529 prior to the SIR exercise. This represents a reduction of over 6.1 million names. The TMC stated that from the 6 million voters placed under adjudication, 2.7 million have been removed.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee submitted her nomination on Wednesday for the Bhabanipur assembly constituency as part of the 2026 State Assembly elections. She will contest against BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, marking a rematch from the previous election.

Expressing confidence in TMC’s prospects, Banerjee said: “I have lived here since my childhood, everything I have is here. I thank and salute the people of Bhabanipur. I have filed my nomination, and I wish victory to all Trinamool Congress candidates. We will form the government. I have many more programmes ahead. Please take care of yourselves in this heat, stay well, stay healthy.”

Polling for the 294-member West Bengal Assembly will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
