West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya stated on Monday that a 'people's government' will soon be formed, signalling the end of the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) political dominance in the state.
Addressing reporters, Bhattacharya said, “…TMC’s current political system has ended, and the people’s government is going to be formed.”
Election Commission of India trends indicate the BJP leading on 187 seats, while the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is ahead on 92 seats. This development suggests a likely defeat for the TMC, ending Mamata Banerjee’s bid for a consecutive fourth term.
West Bengal recorded its highest voter turnout since independence, with 91.66% polling during Phase-II of the Assembly elections. Phase-I polling saw 93.19% turnout, resulting in a combined total of 92.47% participation.
Women workers from the BJP celebrated the party’s performance by carrying paper cones of ‘jhalmuri’ and singing ‘jhal legeche’. A BJP worker remarked, “PM always goes among the common man. He had ‘jhalmuri,’ and it is Didi who felt ‘jhal’ (spicy). She had even humiliated the ‘jhalmuri wala’ and said that an SPG personnel was made to sit there. Common people of the state have given her a befitting reply.”
Meanwhile, BJP supporters chanted ‘Jai Shree Ram’ outside the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata as the BJP appeared to secure a comfortable majority.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, the Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee, won 213 of 294 seats with approximately 48 per cent vote share. The BJP became the main opposition with 77 seats and about 38 per cent of votes, marking a significant increase. The Left-Congress alliance did not win any seats.
