BJP set to form West Bengal government as it leads in 195 seats

Amid celebrations in Siliguri, Anandamoy Barman, the BJP candidate for the Matigara-Naxalbari constituency, addressed the media about the emerging election results.

He attributed the party’s success to a strong public backlash against the ruling administration. “The people of Bengal had already made up their minds,” Barman said. “After the corruption and oppression that the Trinamool Congress had carried out over 15 years, they had to give them a response.”

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading in 195 seats out of 294, surpassing the majority mark in the West Bengal assembly elections. This positions the BJP to potentially unseat the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and form its first government in the state.

Barman stated that the new government would prioritise women’s safety: “The oppression of mothers and sisters will also be secured under the new mandate.” He added, “With the arrival of a double-engine government, Bengal’s stalled work will be completed.”

Earlier, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva praised the party’s third consecutive victory in Assam and described the West Bengal win as “huge.” Speaking to ANI, Sachdeva said the result sent a clear message to Mamata Banerjee that “people don’t want illegal immigrants.” He remarked, “We have formed the government in Assam for the third time, the victory in West Bengal is huge… We thank the Prime Minister… Mamata Didi has been making only allegations for the past year. The people of Bengal have also given a clear message to Mamata Didi… we don’t want illegal immigrants…”

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI) trends, the Trinamool Congress is leading in 87 seats, the Indian National Congress in two, the Aam Janata Unnayan Party in two, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in one.

West Bengal recorded its highest-ever voter turnout since independence with 91.66% participation in Phase II of the assembly elections. Phase I saw 93.19%, making an overall turnout of 92.47%.

In the 2021 assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress secured a decisive win, taking 213 seats with around 48% vote share, while the BJP won 77 seats with nearly 38% of the vote. The Left-Congress alliance failed to secure any seats.
