The Union Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) announced a financial package worth Rs 583 crore for Sikkim on June 1, recognising the state as a national example of sustainable development, organic agriculture, and eco-friendly growth.

Union MDoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated, "Sikkim has emerged as one of India’s strongest examples of ecological stewardship, responsible tourism and organic agriculture under the Centre’s Act East vision."

During his recent visit to Gangtok to celebrate Sikkim's 51st Statehood Day, the Minister launched the "Mission Sikkim Organics" initiative, which has an estimated outlay of Rs 360 crore. The programme aims to elevate Sikkim into a globally integrated premium organic economy and is expected to benefit over 66,000 farming families across the state.

Of this Rs 360 crore, MDoNER will provide Rs 85 crore for infrastructure, aggregation systems, and programme coordination. Additional support is expected through convergence with Central ministries, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), and private-sector investments.

In addition, the Centre inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 21 development projects valued at Rs 223 crore during the Statehood Day celebrations. These projects include roads, bridges, tourism infrastructure, and public connectivity works designed to enhance regional access and economic prospects.

Major projects reviewed during the visit comprised the Temi Tea Estate development works in Namchi, the construction of the Khangchendzonga State University campus at Tarku, and the Bhaleydunga Skywalk project under PM-DevINE. Scindia remarked that these initiatives exemplify Sikkim's balanced approach to development and sustainability.

The Minister also praised Sikkim's biodiversity conservation efforts after visiting the Orchidarium at Saramsa and engaging with local residents at MG Marg in Gangtok.

He added, "The state’s rich culture, environmental protection and organic identity continue to make Sikkim a leading example for the Northeast and the country."
