Congress MP and General Secretary KC Venugopal criticised the BJP on Thursday regarding the FCRA Amendment Bill 2026, accusing the ruling party of displaying double standards towards the Christian community.

Addressing the media in Palakkad, Kerala, Venugopal alleged that the BJP presents cakes to Christians during the Christmas season, while simultaneously targeting nuns and priests through amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. “Congress is exposing their double standard,” Venugopal stated. “Whenever Christmas season is coming, they will go to the Christians with cake. After that, they will attack nuns, they will attack fathers and they will do this type of FCRA amendment legislation to attack the Christian community. This is the double standard. We are exposing that double standard of Kiren Rijiju.”

The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25, seeks to amend the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, in order to enhance the transparency and accountability of foreign contributions in India. The bill was scheduled for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

In the context of the upcoming Kerala assembly elections, Venugopal also discussed the United Democratic Front (UDF) manifesto. He announced a proposed pension increase of ₹3,000 and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to public welfare by guaranteeing the continuation of the Oommen Chandy Health Insurance Scheme, which covers up to ₹25 lakh. Venugopal stated these measures aim to provide comprehensive social and financial security for the poor across Kerala.

“Our commitment to the people is reflecting to the manifesto. We are providing a guarantee for ladies and women. We are providing a guarantee for elderly people. We are guaranteeing a pension for an increase in pension through 3000. We are guaranteeing a women’s health insurance scheme up to 25 lakhs. Basically, so many things are in the manifesto. Basically, we are covering the poor people of Kerala completely,” he added.

The Kerala assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4. The current assembly's term will end on May 23.
