The Congress party released its second list of eight candidates for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections on Wednesday, substituting seven candidates previously named in the first list.
In the second phase of the West Bengal polls, the party nominated Tahir SK for the Nakashipara seat, replacing Golam Kibria Mandal; Asif Khan replaced Rahidul Mandal in Chapra; Sunayana Biswar took the place of Barnali Naskar in Minakhan (SC); Chand Sarkar replaced Kaushik Baidya in Mandibazar (SC); and Pampa Malik substituted Anik Saha in Raina (SC). Abu Bakkar replaced Md Mofirrul Kassem in Ketugram, while Tapas Baral succeeded Nisha Baral in Ausgram (SC). Additionally, Pranab Bhattacharya was named the candidate for Habra.
Previously, on March 29, Congress announced candidates for 284 constituencies, including the seven candidates later replaced, for the West Bengal Assembly elections.
The party has nominated Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Baharampur, Pradip Prasad from Bhabanipur, and Mausam Noor, a recent entrant to the party, who will contest from Malatipur. Other candidates include Madhap Rai from Darjeeling, Abdul Hannan from Sujapur, Susmita Biswas from Dum Dum, Gautam Bhattacharya from Diamond Harbour, Souvik Mukherjee from Asansol Dakshin, and Prasenjit Puitandi from Asansol Uttar.
Polling for West Bengal’s 294-member Assembly will take place in two phases, with the first phase covering 152 constituencies and the second phase involving 142 seats, according to the Election Commission of India. Vote counting is scheduled for May 4.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Congress was unable to secure any seats. Following a poor performance in that election, the party aims to transform the contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party into a three-way competition.
