The Government of Delhi will introduce 20 advanced geriatric ambulances to enhance emergency healthcare services for elderly patients in the city.
These vehicles will be equipped with modern medical facilities to provide improved response times and better pre-hospital care for senior citizens.
Currently, the Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS) operates a fleet of 331 ambulances coordinated via a centralised control room accessible through the toll-free number 102. This system is also integrated with the 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS). With the addition of the geriatric ambulances, the total number will rise to 351, significantly increasing Delhi’s emergency response capacity.
The government plans to expand the ambulance fleet to 1,000 vehicles in phases, aiming to create a stronger and more future-ready emergency response network in the city, according to an official release.
This initiative forms part of the Delhi Government’s wider strategy to improve healthcare accessibility and responsiveness, supported by a substantial health sector budget allocation of Rs 13,034 crore. Priorities also include completing key hospital infrastructure projects and upgrading critical care facilities to ensure that emergency services like CATS receive robust institutional backing.
Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said: “The launch of geriatric ambulances reflects our commitment to building a healthcare system that is inclusive and responsive to the needs of every citizen, especially our elderly population. These ambulances, equipped with modern life-support systems, will ensure timely medical intervention. Simultaneously, under the leadership of Hon’ble Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, we are strengthening hospital infrastructure and critical care facilities so that emergency response seamlessly connects with quality treatment on the ground.”
By integrating advanced emergency services with ongoing healthcare infrastructure enhancements, the Delhi Government aims to develop a more efficient, inclusive, and patient-centred healthcare system with particular focus on the care and wellbeing of senior citizens, the release added.
