Delhi police prevent secret burial in suspected honour killing of girl

A murder case has been registered at PS Hari Nagar in Delhi after the police intercepted a secret burial of a girl's body, which was being taken for interment.

Authorities responded to a PCR call reporting that the girl had been killed by her family due to her relationship with a cousin.

The post-mortem report confirmed the cause of death as smothering. Police received the call on April 1, 2026, at approximately 2:00 PM from an individual alleging that his cousin’s female friend had been murdered by her family and was being taken for a clandestine burial. Officers arrived just as the family was performing burial rites and immediately stopped the proceedings to secure the body.

Preliminary investigations indicated the girl was in a relationship with a male relative, which reportedly met with family opposition and is suspected to be the motive for the killing. The Crime Team and Forensic Science Laboratory inspected the scene, and the body was transported to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital mortuary. The post-mortem contradicted any claims by the family of a natural death.

A formal FIR for murder has been registered at PS Hari Nagar. The police are questioning both the family members and the PCR caller’s cousin to establish a timeline.

Additional details are awaited.

Separately, the West District of Delhi Police conducted a 48-hour intensive enforcement drive named Operation Kavach 13.0 from March 29 (6 PM) to March 31 (6 PM), under directives from the Police Headquarters.
