Delhi Police has registered a first information report (FIR) concerning a clash during the Hansraj College festival held on April 8 and 9 in New Delhi, officials confirmed on Monday.

The action follows reports of violence and misconduct during the annual event.

The FIR was filed after the college administration submitted a complaint. Preliminary investigations indicated incidents of violence as well as the alleged entry of outsiders, which may have contributed to the disturbances. The case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). No arrests have been made to date.

Delhi Police sources stated, “Acting on a complaint by the administration, Delhi Police has registered an FIR in the Hansraj clash during a college festival matter. Preliminary reports indicate incidents of violence and the alleged entry of outsiders during the event. The case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. No arrests have been made so far, as police are continuing to verify facts and examine the circumstances.”

Earlier, Hansraj College suspended approximately 30 students, including four office-bearers of its Students’ Union, pending disciplinary proceedings. The suspensions relate to allegations ranging from defaming the college on social media platforms to using derogatory language.

In a notice dated April 25, the college administration stated that the union office-bearers had been suspended with immediate effect. The notice barred the suspended students from entering the college premises during the suspension, except for attending examinations and internal assessments. The suspension period was described as interim and effective until further notice.

An initial notice issued on April 20 targeted a single student for acts of indiscipline, including defaming the institution and using derogatory language against staff. A subsequent notice named 14 students for involvement in indiscipline, physical violence, and disruption during the annual festival.

Hansraj College principal Prof (Dr.) Rama was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
