Delhi University rejects Rahul Gandhi's claims on interview process eliminating students

Delhi University has dismissed claims made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that the university uses interviews to eliminate students based on caste.

The university stated that admissions are primarily based on scores from the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), and interviews are not part of the standard admission process for most undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

In a post on X, Delhi University noted that if Rahul Gandhi was referring to recruitment processes for faculty positions, the university has recently hired thousands of teachers across various categories. The statement urged the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha to verify facts before making public statements.

“We strongly object to such comments, as they create a non-conducive environment in the University. The Leader of Opposition should have verified the facts before making such a statement,” the university said, tagging the Ministry of Education on X.

The remarks from Rahul Gandhi came during the ‘Samvidhaan Sammelan’ event in Lucknow on Friday, commemorating the birth anniversary of Bahujan Samaj Party founder Kanshi Ram. Gandhi asserted, “I went to Delhi University. An interview is a method to eliminate students. They ask what your caste is, and then you fail in the interview.”

He also criticised the RSS for its organisational structure, alleging a lack of representation from backward classes. “Take out the list of RSS organisations, those who are their pracharaks, in the centre, you will not find one OBC, one Dalit, one Adivasi. This is completely against the Constitution,” Gandhi said.

Delhi University reiterated that admissions are conducted transparently using CUET scores and that interviews are not involved in the procedure for most courses.
