The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) apprehended a passenger at Calicut International Airport on April 17 as part of its ongoing crackdown on narcotic drug trafficking.
The individual, a native of Malappuram District, arrived from Muscat and was intercepted by officers from the Calicut Regional Unit and Kannur Regional Unit of the DRI Cochin Zonal Unit.
Authorities recovered two packets containing a total of 1,974 grams of crystal methamphetamine concealed in food packets within the passenger’s checked-in baggage. The narcotics have an estimated illicit international market value of approximately Rs 1.58 crore.
The passenger was arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigations are ongoing to trace the narcotics’ source and identify the broader smuggling network involved.
Earlier, on March 2, the DRI seized 1.931 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine at Calicut International Airport from a native of Palakkad.
During the last financial year, the DRI Cochin Zonal Unit seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, including hydroponic weed, methamphetamine, and cocaine, valued at Rs 70.76 crore in Kerala. These operations led to the arrest of 21 individuals.
These continued enforcement efforts reflect the DRI’s commitment to the Government of India’s vision of a Nasha Mukt Bharat (Drug Free India).
