An earthquake measuring 5.9 in magnitude was felt in Delhi on Friday, according to a statement from the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The tremors originated at a depth of approximately 146 kilometres, with the epicentre located in Afghanistan.
In a post on X, the NCS stated: “EQ of M: 5.9, On: 03/04/2026 21:42:57 IST, Lat: 36.398 N, Long: 70.878 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
A resident described the experience to ANI: “The earthquake occurred 15 minutes ago. I was cooking when I felt it… I live on the fifth floor, and while I was coming down, the earthquake had stopped by then…”
Another individual reported, “When the earthquake struck, I was sitting in the room, and I felt the bed shaking, and when I looked up, the fan was shaking too. When I came out, I saw that the people around me were also scared.”
The quake was also perceptible in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, where chandeliers and fans were observed moving.
According to USGS data, earthquakes can occur at depths ranging from the Earth’s surface down to approximately 700 kilometres. These are classified into shallow (0-70 km), intermediate (70-300 km), and deep (300-700 km) categories. The term “deep-focus earthquakes” generally refers to those occurring below 70 kilometres.
