FC Goa delivered a commanding 2-0 victory over league leaders Mumbai City FC at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda, Margao, on Saturday, ending Mumbai City's unbeaten run in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 season.
Sahil Tavora and Muhammed Nemil Valiyattil scored the goals for Goa, with Nemil’s stunning long-range strike just before half-time being a highlight. Nemil was also named Player of the Match, according to a press release.
The hosts started strongly, controlling possession and applying pressure early on. Despite attempts from Raynier Fernandes and Sahil Tavora, Mumbai City’s defence, led by Nuno Reis and Bijay Chhetri, initially held firm. Mumbai City sought counter-attacking opportunities through Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Noufal PN, but clear chances were limited as Goa dictated the tempo.
The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when a corner from Dejan Drazic caused confusion in the Mumbai penalty area. After an initial shot was blocked, Sahil Tavora reacted swiftly to strike the ball into the bottom corner, giving Goa the lead.
Mumbai City responded quickly, with Noufal testing Goa keeper Hrithik Tiwari and Joni Kauko having a shot blocked. However, Goa remained composed.
In stoppage time before half-time, Goa extended their lead with a moment of brilliance. After winning an aerial duel in midfield, Muhammed Nemil received a pass from Raynier Fernandes and unleashed a left-footed strike from nearly 35 yards into the top corner, leaving Mumbai City’s goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa with no chance and delighting the home crowd.
Goa maintained confidence after the interval, while Mumbai City pushed forward in pursuit of a goal. Although Mumbai City dominated possession, Goa’s defence, anchored by Pol Moreno and Sandesh Jhingan, remained firm. Attempts by Pereyra Diaz and Lallianzuala Chhangte were either blocked or failed to trouble Tiwari.
Mumbai City introduced fresh players in the second half but were unable to create clear opportunities. Tiwari made several crucial saves, including denying substitute Vikram Partap Singh, while long-range efforts from Noufal and Chhangte missed the target.
In the final minutes, Mumbai City narrowly missed scoring when a dangerous cross from Chhangte found substitute Zothanpuia, who could not convert, reflecting a frustrating evening for the visitors.
FC Goa secured a deserved 2-0 victory, rising to third place in the standings with 16 points from nine matches. Mumbai City FC remain top with 18 points, but their unbeaten streak has ended, intensifying the competition for the title.
