CD Gopinath, the last surviving member of India's first Test victory team, has died in Chennai at the age of 96, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Gopinath was also India's oldest Test cricketer and the second oldest in the world after Australia's Neil Harvey, who is 97 years and 183 days old.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) paid tribute on its X social media account, stating, “Rest in peace, CD Gopinath! A true pioneer of Indian cricket and the last surviving member of the historic team that scripted India's first-ever Test victory. Your legacy will forever be etched in the game's rich history.”

Born in Chennai on March 1, 1930, Chingleput Gopinath was a stylist with a wide range of strokes. He played 83 First Class matches, scoring 4,259 runs in 119 innings at an average of 42.16. His record includes nine centuries and 23 half-centuries, with a highest score of 234 in first-class cricket.

Gopinath made his Test debut against England at the Brabourne Stadium in 1951. Batting at number eight, he scored an unbeaten 50 in his first innings-a career-best in Tests-and 42 in the second, as India drew the match. The fifth Test of that series, played at his home ground in Chennai, marked India's first Test win by an innings and eight runs. Gopinath made 35 runs in that match.

In total, he played eight Test matches and 12 innings, accumulating 242 runs at an average of 22, including one half-century. Gopinath's final Test appearance was against Australia at Eden Gardens in 1960.

With his passing, Chandrakant Patankar, who played one Test against New Zealand at Eden Gardens in 1956 and is 95 years old, is now India's oldest living Test cricketer.
