India continued to dominate the inaugural World Yogasana Championships at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on January 31, 2026, extending their lead on the penultimate day.
Former Miss Gujarat Super Model winner Heena Rajgor spearheaded the gold medal tally, with India securing a total of 40 gold, eight silver, and two bronze medals, amounting to 50 medals overall.
Japan moved into second place with three golds and ten medals in total, while Singapore stood third with six medals, including two golds. The championship represents a significant milestone in elevating Yogasana from an ancient Indian practice to a globally competitive sporting discipline as it seeks recognition within the Olympic movement. The event is supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Ministry of Ayush, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sports Authority of Gujarat, Gujarat Tourism, and Gujarat Yogasana Sports Association.
Heena Rajgor, originally from Bhuj in Gujarat and currently pursuing a PhD in Yoga, won gold in the Forward Bend competition in the Senior B Female category with 43.50 points. She commented, "It is always special to win a gold medal on my home turf. When I took up Yogasana competitively after Covid, I had struggled to perform in competitions. But then I worked on my mental focus and the results are definitely coming." Preeti Jaimani of Oman won silver with 38.15 points, while Svetlana Lukashova of Russia and Maya Al Alostath of Jordan shared the bronze.
In addition to India's performance, Japan added two gold medals, won by Hisashi Watanabe in Supine Individual Senior B Male and Tomoka Shimizu in Leg Balance Individual Senior C Female. Russia's Svetlana Lukashova claimed gold in the Senior B Female category for Supine Individual, and Kamolatdin Rakhmanov secured Uzbekistan's first gold in Leg Balance Individual Senior C Male.
Results included multiple medalists across categories: in Artistic Single, Rohan Tayade (India) won Sub Junior Male gold; Tripti Dongare (India) won Junior Male gold; Rudrakshi Bhave (India) took Senior Female gold; and Arjun Parmar (India) secured Senior Male gold.
In Supine Individual events, Nisha Chawda (India) won Senior A Female gold, Vikash Lather (India) Senior A Male gold, and Svetlana Lukashova (Russia), Senior B Female gold. Hisashi Watanabe (Japan) won Senior B Male gold.
Traditional Yogasana saw Devanshi Garg (India) win Sub Junior Female gold, Heena Rajgor (India) taking Senior B Female gold in Forward Bend, Tomoko Shimizu (Japan) Senior C Female gold in Leg Balance Individual, and Kamolatdin Rakhmanov (Uzbekistan) Senior C Male gold in Leg Balance Individual.
