Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta urged young people to embrace the 'Nation First' philosophy as essential to realising India's vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. He emphasised this message on Saturday while addressing the 9th Convocation Ceremony of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh in Dharamshala.
The event was attended by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan as Chief Guest. The Governor highlighted India’s ancient education system as one that integrates knowledge, values, and character, stating that education’s true purpose extends beyond securing employment to fostering holistic development. “A degree is not the end of your journey; it is the beginning of your duty towards society and the nation,” Gupta said to the graduating students, adding that their skills should serve national welfare as well as personal advancement.
Welcoming the Vice President to Devbhoomi Himachal Pradesh, the Governor expressed pride at his presence, describing it as adding distinction to the convocation ceremony. He congratulated 32 gold medallists, including 23 female students, recognising this achievement as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative. Gupta noted girls’ leadership in education, research, and innovation as contributing to India’s progress.
In total, 511 students received degrees across various disciplines during the ceremony. The Governor underscored universities’ vital role in national transformation, calling on higher education institutions to cultivate individuals equipped with knowledge, innovation, and a strong national purpose rather than solely producing degree holders.
Gupta praised the Central University of Himachal Pradesh for aligning with the National Education Policy 2020, which advocates inclusive, multidisciplinary, and skill-oriented education. He lauded the university's focus on research, innovation, and skill-based learning, as well as its publication of 34 works on the Indian knowledge tradition and translations into Punjabi and Dogri languages, contributing to cultural preservation.
The Governor also welcomed the university’s recent autonomy granted by the University Grants Commission, viewing it as recognition of its academic excellence. He expressed confidence that the institution would continue to advance in education, research, and innovation to support India’s journey towards becoming a Viksit Bharat.
