IMD issues orange alert for hailstorms and strong winds in multiple states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert on Saturday for several states, predicting widespread hailstorms, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty to squally winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph.

The advisory covers Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Vidarbha, East Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, where intense weather activity is forecast over the next 24 hours.

An orange alert has also been issued for Jammu and Kashmir, forecasting isolated heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. In the southern peninsular region, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with a yellow warning in place for continued thunderstorm activity.

Yellow alerts have been issued for West Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and the northeastern states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Odisha is also under a warning for hot and humid weather conditions.

On Saturday evening, hailstorm, rain showers, and strong winds affected Gwalior, with the IMD issuing a yellow alert for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Isolated rainfall was reported in Bhopal and Indore divisions and at several locations in Narmadapuram, Rewa, Jabalpur, and Sagar divisions.

Temperature fluctuations were noted, with maximum temperatures falling by 2.1°C to 3.4°C in Gwalior, Rewa, and Sagar divisions, and minimum temperatures decreasing by up to 2.4°C in Gwalior and Rewa divisions.

Strong winds and rain also impacted Kanpur, with the IMD forecasting a “partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers.” In northern areas, rain affected parts of Dharamshala.

Rajasthan has reported crop damage due to similar adverse weather. Deputy Chief Minister Prem Chand Bairwa described the situation as a “natural disaster” and assured support for affected farmers. Speaking to ANI, he said, “A natural disaster has struck here… The Chief Minister has directed all officials to assess the damage and has asked all public representatives to submit reports from their respective areas. Our Chief Minister and the BJP government stand with the farmers.”
