The Indian under-20 women's national football team suffered a 0-5 defeat against Australia during the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2026 match at Pathum Thani Stadium in Pathum Thani, Thailand, on Sunday.
According to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Skye Halmarick scored a hat-trick with goals in the 38th minute via penalty, 39th, and 48th minutes. Danella Brutus added another goal in the 54th minute, followed by Daisy Brown scoring in stoppage time (90+4′).
This loss places India at the bottom of Group C, with zero points from their two matches. However, a win against Chinese Taipei in their final group-stage game on Wednesday could enable Joakim Alexandersson's team to progress to the knockout stage.
Despite the heavy defeat, the Young Tigresses started the match energetically, frequently launching counter-attacks against Australia's possession-centred game. Sulanjana Raul made a strong run down the left flank in the fourth minute and delivered a low cross to Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam, who was closely marked and lost possession. Soon after, Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam's cross from the opposite side was intercepted.
Australia's midfielder Avaani Prakash had the first chance of the match when she took a shot saved by Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem. Anju also attempted a long-distance free-kick, which sailed over the bar.
The Young Matildas opened the scoring in the 38th minute after Butrus was fouled inside the Indian penalty area by Cindy Colney, resulting in a penalty converted by Halmarick. A minute later, Halmarick scored again with a header from a Peta Trimis cross.
Halmarick completed her hat-trick in the 48th minute with a deflected shot. Australia extended their lead to 4-0 in the 54th minute when Brutus advanced into the Indian box and scored.
India continued to fight until late in the game, with Monalisha making several saves, including attempts from Trimis. The team's best chance came in the 85th minute when Bhumika Devi Khumukcham delivered a precise cross to Sibani, who headed the ball wide.
Remi Thokchom made a clearance off the goal line shortly before Australia scored their fifth goal during injury time. Substitute Daisy Brown intercepted a pass from Thoibisana Chanu Toijam and scored to complete the match's final scoreline.
