India concluded the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 in Ulaanbaatar with a total of five gold medals, finishing second in the overall medal table behind Kazakhstan.
Vishvanath Suresh secured gold in the men’s 50kg category, defeating Japan’s Daichi Iwai by a 5:0 margin in the final.
In addition to Vishvanath’s success, Sachin earned a silver medal in the 60kg category, contributing to a robust performance from the Indian men’s boxing team. The country amassed sixteen medals in total, the highest overall count at the championships.
The Indian women’s team led the medal tally with ten medals, including four gold, two silver, and four bronze. This marked one of their strongest showings at the continental level.
Vishvanath’s gold medal represents a significant advancement in his boxing career. Having consistently performed well in national competitions, he has established himself internationally, notably defeating the world number one en route to the final.
Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh commented on the overall campaign: “This has been a remarkable campaign for Indian boxing and for our women who have topped the medal charts with four gold medals. Our men’s team was impressive again, especially young Vishva with his gold, whose performance shows the strength of our pipeline. What stands out is the depth of talent coming through–despite changes from the previous World Championships, this team has shown tremendous character and promise while claiming titles against some of the continent’s toughest fighters. We are seeing a new wave of upcoming talent and multiple medal contenders stepping up on the big stage, which bodes extremely well for the future of Indian boxing.”
Among the women’s gold medal winners were Minakshi (48kg), Preeti (54kg), Priya (60kg), and Arundhati (70kg), who exhibited dominance in their respective categories. The team also secured silver medals through Jaismine (57kg) and Alfiyan Pathan (80+kg), alongside four bronze medals, demonstrating consistent performances across weight classes.
The results underline the strengthening of India’s boxing programme, with emerging athletes making significant impacts at major international events. As India approaches forthcoming international competitions and qualifiers, the team's achievements at the Asian Championships affirm its position as a leading force in Asian boxing and indicate the readiness of the next generation to compete on the global stage.
