India Women secured a 38-run victory over England Women in the opening T20 International of the three-match series at Chelmsford on May 29. Jemimah Rodrigues was named Player of the Match for her fluent 40-ball 69, featuring 10 boundaries and a six.
Reflecting on her performance, Rodrigues credited her batting partner, Yastika Bhatia, for easing pressure during a pivotal partnership. “A lot of credit to Yastika. She took a load off me. That partnership was crucial,” she said.
Rodrigues emphasised the importance of adapting to conditions, stating, “We assessed the conditions well. It was about playing the situation. T20 is all about momentum. It was important to be positive and patient.” She also noted the early movement from the English attack, commenting, “Initially, Bell got some movement. For an English pitch, there was some hold. Playing the square of the wicket helped.” She added, “My game is more about picking gaps. I trust my instincts and play my game.”
The Indian batter described the fielding effort as demanding yet enjoyable: “I enjoy fielding. Felt like a yo-yo session. I love fielding in the hot spots.”
After India were put in to bat, an early loss of Smriti Mandhana was stabilised by a strong partnership between Yastika Bhatia, who scored a brisk 54 off 40 balls, and Rodrigues. A late surge, including contributions from Deepti Sharma, helped set a competitive total of 188 for 7.
England’s bowling was led by Lauren Bell, who took three wickets, alongside disciplined spells from Tilly Corteen-Coleman in the middle overs.
In reply, England suffered early wickets before Amy Jones responded with a resilient 67 off 48 balls, supported briefly by Heather Knight. However, timely strikes from India’s bowlers, led by Nandni Sharma’s 3 for 23, disrupted the chase. Kranti Gaud claimed early wickets while Deepti Sharma provided control in the middle overs.
England fell short by 38 runs, handing India a comprehensive victory characterised by strong batting depth, disciplined bowling, and sharp fielding. The win gives India Women a 1-0 lead in the series.
