The Indian Navy commissioned INS Taragiri in Visakhapatnam on January 31, 2026, marking a significant advancement in its naval capabilities described as a journey of 'strength, stealth and indigenous excellence.' The commissioning ceremony was held in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

In a statement circulated via its official social media, the Navy highlighted INS Taragiri as a symbol of India’s emergence as a formidable maritime power, stating: “Legacy Reborn. Power Redefined. Presenting the story of INS Taragiri – a journey of strength, stealth and indigenous excellence, reflecting India’s rise as a formidable maritime power. From legacy to the future fleet, Taragiri stands ready to safeguard the seas.”

INS Taragiri is the fourth vessel indigenously built under the Project 17A class and represents a significant technological progression with a weight of 6,670 tonnes. Constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, the frigate features a sleeker design and a markedly reduced Radar Cross-Section, enhancing its stealth capabilities.

The ship has over 75 percent indigenous content, evidencing the development of a robust domestic industrial base involving more than 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. This achievement supports the Government of India’s Aatmanirbharta initiatives and sustains thousands of jobs within the country.

Equipped with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, INS Taragiri is designed for high-speed and high-endurance operational versatility. Its armament includes supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, and an advanced Anti-Submarine Warfare suite integrated into a comprehensive Combat Management System, enabling rapid and precise threat responses.

Beyond combat roles, the frigate is also capable of undertaking diplomatic missions and humanitarian assistance, including disaster relief operations, reflecting its adaptable mission profile.

The Indian Navy emphasises that INS Taragiri strengthens its position as a combat-ready, cohesive, credible, and self-reliant force tasked with securing the nation's maritime boundaries. The ship stands as a testament to Indian design, construction, and operation, symbolising the country's growing maritime power and commitment to safeguarding its blue frontiers.
