Defence Minister Rajnath Singh formally commissioned the indigenous nuclear-powered submarine INS Aridaman into the Indian Navy on April 3, a notable advancement in India's strategic maritime capabilities.
INS Aridaman is the third vessel of the Arihant class nuclear submarines constructed for the Indian Navy under Project ATV at Visakhapatnam.
This induction is expected to enhance the Navy’s operational strength. The Defence Minister also inducted the frigate Taragiri in Visakhapatnam on the same day.
The arrival of Taragiri, amid the increasing strategic and maritime importance of India’s eastern seaboard, reflects the Navy’s sustained emphasis on combat readiness and operational strength through its fleet augmentation programme.
As the fourth platform within the Project 17A class, Taragiri is a 6,670-tonne vessel built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai. It represents a generational upgrade featuring a sleeker design and significantly reduced Radar Cross-Section for enhanced stealth capabilities.
With indigenous content exceeding 75 per cent, the ship demonstrates the maturity of the domestic industrial ecosystem, involving over 200 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), thus supporting the Government of India’s Aatmanirbharta initiatives and employment generation.
Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion plant, Taragiri is designed for high-speed, long-endurance operations, capable of multi-dimensional maritime roles.
The vessel’s weapon suite includes supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, and a specialised Anti-Submarine Warfare suite, integrated through a state-of-the-art Combat Management System enabling rapid threat response.
Besides combat roles, Taragiri is equipped for diplomatic missions and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, offering a flexible mission profile.
The Indian Navy continues to grow as a combat-ready, cohesive, and credible force committed to safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests with indigenously designed, built, and operated ships. Taragiri exemplifies this vision as a symbol of India’s rising maritime power and a guardian of its blue frontiers.
