Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Ishan Kishan acknowledged that his team struggled with execution during key moments after their six-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match at Mullanpur on Saturday.
Speaking during the post-match presentation, Kishan reflected on SRH’s batting, highlighting that the side had the potential to post a significantly higher total after a strong start but failed to capitalise in the latter part of the innings.
“We could have ended with a total of 240 at least. But you know, things happen. We were not so good with execution,” Kishan said. He stressed the importance of disciplined execution in T20 cricket, particularly under pressure when bowling or batting.
“Like I said earlier, in T20 cricket, the most important thing is the execution of your good balls. So we were not that great today,” he added.
SRH posted 219 for 6 in their 20 overs, powered by a commanding opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. Kishan noted that this platform allowed the team to aim for a 240-plus total at one stage.
“I thought 219 was a good total anyway. Just because we started in a very good manner, we thought we could end up getting 240,” he said.
The captain attributed the defeat to repeated lapses in execution and an inability to effectively respond to opposition batters in the second innings.
“I think we were lacking at that point of time. I think that showed in their batting there,” Kishan observed.
Punjab Kings mounted a record-breaking chase, surpassing the target of 220 with seven balls to spare. After being put in to bat, SRH posted a strong total boosted by a 120-run opening stand.
Abhishek Sharma scored a blistering 74 from 28 balls, including eight sixes and five fours, while Travis Head contributed 38 off 23. The duo propelled SRH to 105 for no loss within the first six overs, establishing one of the most explosive powerplays in IPL history.
Despite losing both openers quickly to Shashank Singh, SRH maintained momentum, reaching 132 for 2 at the halfway point and 176 for 3 after 15 overs. However, regular wickets during the death overs, including dismissals of Kishan (27) and Heinrich Klaasen (39), prevented SRH from surpassing 230.
Key bowlers for PBKS included Shashank Singh (2/20), Arshdeep Singh (2/50), and Xavier Bartlett (1 wicket).
PBKS responded aggressively, with openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh dominating the SRH bowling attack. Priyansh scored 57 off 20 balls, while Prabhsimran made 51 from 25 balls, enabling PBKS to reach 93 without loss in the powerplay and pass 100 within 6.3 overs.
Though SRH fought back with quick wickets from Shivang Kumar, dismissing both openers and Cooper Connolly, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the chase with an unbeaten 69 from 33 balls, striking five fours and five sixes.
Iyer partnered with Nehal Wadhera to rebuild the innings and accelerated the run rate, guiding PBKS to 223 for 4 in 18.5 overs, sealing the victory alongside Shashank Singh.
Shivang Kumar was notable for SRH with figures of 3 for 33, but overall the bowling unit could not contain PBKS's powerful top order during the powerplay and death overs, which proved decisive.
This win marked Punjab Kings' tenth successful chase of a 200-plus target in IPL history, reinforcing their reputation as one of the tournament's most formidable chasing teams.
