Golaghat (Assam) [India], April 2: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren criticised the 'double-engine government' in Assam on Thursday, questioning the condition of labourers in the state's tea gardens.

His remarks followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Wednesday to a tea garden in Dibrugarh, where he interacted with workers and plucked tea leaves during his visit to the poll-bound state.

Addressing a gathering in Golaghat, Soren criticised the government over the basic amenities provided to the people. “We went to village after village here. The Prime Minister talks about providing pucca houses to everyone, but how many people have actually received pucca houses?… What is the condition of the labourers in the tea gardens? What is the state of electricity, water, roads, and hospitals?… And here, there is a double-engine government…” he said.

On the same day, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi reiterated allegations that US President Donald Trump controls Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Trump holds Modi’s future in his hands. Gandhi also claimed that Modi exerts similar control over Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Speaking at a public rally in Jorhat, Gandhi said, “Donald Trump gives orders to Modi, and Modi says nothing – because he knows Trump holds his (Modi) future in his hands. Donald Trump controls Narendra Modi. If Trump tells Modi to jump, Narendra Modi will ask how long and will start jumping. This is because Trump holds the controls over Narendra Modi.” He further alleged that Modi has influence over Sarma due to knowledge of his “corruption and crimes.”

Polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam is scheduled for a single phase on April 9, with vote counting set for May 4. The election will see a contest primarily between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government and the Congress party.
