Jharkhand handloom brings tribal art to modern fashion

Jharkhand handloom brings tribal art to modern fashion

TheNewsMill 3 days ago

Jharkhand's tribal textiles and traditional art forms are increasingly integrated into contemporary fashion, blending cultural heritage with modern style.

Once limited to villages and local communities, indigenous patterns inspired by tribal culture are now becoming part of mainstream wardrobes.

Johargram, a Ranchi-based initiative, leads this transformation by reimagining Jharkhand’s rich tribal heritage in fashion. Drawing on traditional Sohrai art and indigenous textile techniques, the venture offers a platform where local craftsmanship intersects with contemporary design.

Sohrai painting, a prominent tribal art form associated with village walls and cultural practices, is now being adapted into garments, stoles, jackets, and accessories, revitalising these motifs within the fashion industry.

This shift reflects a broader trend among young consumers attracted to clothing that combines cultural roots with modern aesthetics. Customer Rocky Singh said: “I came here because I really like tribal patterns. I bought this cotton jacket because its design is unique and different from what is commonly available.”

Ashish Satyavrat Sahu, founder of Johargram and a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) graduate, explained the project’s origins: “The idea came to me while I was studying at NIFT. Whenever I researched tribal textiles from Jharkhand, I found very little documentation or representation in mainstream fashion. Despite the richness of the art and culture, it had not received the visibility it deserved. That inspired me to bring these traditions into the mainstream.”

Focusing on Bihar and Jharkhand due to their rich tribal culture and distinctive lifestyle traditions, Sahu stated: “My goal is to take Jharkhand’s identity to the world through textiles.”

Johargram has become a sought-after destination for fashion enthusiasts, creative professionals, and members of the film industry seeking unique designs rooted in Indian heritage. Filmmaker Purushottam remarked: “At a time when modernisation and westernisation are growing rapidly, Johargram has emerged as a leader in presenting traditional clothing in a modern way. Whenever we need something special, Johargram is our first choice.”

The initiative also provides practical experience for young people. Students and interns gain skills in brand management, design, and business operations while working alongside local artisans. Intern Sapna Kumari said: “We learned a great deal here. Our work was mainly related to brand management and buyer interactions, and it helped us gain valuable practical knowledge while working on our college projects.” Rekha Mahato added: “This has been a wonderful opportunity for us. Getting our first internship in our own state is very special. Working here has allowed us to connect our academic learning with real-world experience.”

Although the garments are part of modern fashion, the production remains deeply rooted in Jharkhand’s villages and traditions. By combining indigenous art, local handloom, and contemporary design, Johargram is expanding the reach of tribal heritage while creating livelihoods and opportunities for local communities.

As tribal-inspired apparel gains popularity among younger consumers, Jharkhand’s traditional craftsmanship is evolving from a historical legacy into a dynamic element of India's fashion future, where local artistry attains global recognition and cultural identity becomes a defining style.
