New Delhi, April 17: Congress leader Karti Chidambaram stated that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has consistently supported the Women's Reservation Bill.

Speaking from the Parliament premises on Friday, he expressed concern over the government's approach of presenting the delimitation bill as a facade while pushing through the other bill, which his party opposes.

"DMK has always supported the Women's Reservation Bill, and we were the ones who had given the right for a property for women way back in 1989 and in the local board reservation, our present Chief Minister has given 50% reservation. So there is no doubt, doubt about that we offer it. But this manoeuvring, or this making, bringing the delimitation in the gar of the women's reservation, well, having this as a facade and bulldozing the other bill, that is a matter of concern, and we are opposing only that," he said.

Chidambaram also criticised the Central government's proposal of the Delimitation Bill, comparing its presentation to an insurance sales pitch, where oral assurances differ from the bill's details. He wrote on X, "The delimitation 'sales pitch' by the government is like that of an insurance salesman, they say one thing & the fine print says something else."

His remarks followed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's participation in the debate, where Shah contested claims that the proposed delimitation would reduce southern states' representation in Parliament. Shah stated, "The biggest narrative being created is that these three bills, the Constitution Amendment Bill, bill on delimitation, and changes to the constituency election law, will harm the power of the South." He highlighted that the proportion of southern MPs would remain approximately the same, increasing from 23.76% to 23.97% with the new allocations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed opposition concerns about delimitation and the planned increase in Lok Sabha strength to implement the Women's Reservation Act starting from the 2029 elections.

The Lok Sabha continues discussions and is scheduled to vote on the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, extending this reservation to Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, and the Delimitation Bill, which will increase and redraw Lok Sabha constituencies to total 850 seats.

On Thursday, the Lok Sabha conducted a 12-hour session to debate amendments to the Women's Reservation Bill, including the removal of the requirement to implement the bill only after a census is conducted.
