As the doors of Kedarnath Temple opened on January 31, 2026, welcoming numerous devotees, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reflected on the significance of the occasion.

He extended a heartfelt welcome and best wishes to the pilgrims through a post on X, describing the Kedarnath Dham and the Chardham Yatra as a “divine celebration of our faith, unity, and rich traditions.”

“Today, on the sacred land of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, the doors of Shri Kedarnath Dham have been opened for all of us devotees with full rites and rituals. This journey to Kedarnath Dham and the Chardham is a divine celebration of our faith, unity, and rich traditions. Through these journeys, we also get glimpses of India’s eternal culture,” the Prime Minister wrote.

On the commencement of the Chardham Yatra this year, he also shared a letter addressed to all devotees coming to Uttarakhand, expressing his wish that “Baba Kedar continues to shower his blessings on everyone and make your journeys auspicious. Har-Har Mahadev!”

In his letter, the Prime Minister highlighted the religious and spiritual importance of the four sacred sites-Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri-set amidst the Himalayas and sacred rivers.

“Badrinath and Kedarnath are not just pilgrimage sites; they are symbols of our ancient culture and traditions. The temples of Badrinath and Kedarnath, located in the Himalayas, are renowned for their spiritual significance and natural beauty. These places have been revered as sacred by devotees for centuries. The Char Dham Yatra, which includes Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, is a sacred pilgrimage for Hindus. These four dhams are not only centres of faith but also storehouses of our rich cultural and spiritual heritage. The serene atmosphere of these places, the majestic Himalayas, and the sacred rivers provide a unique spiritual experience to the devotees,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister also highlighted ongoing developmental projects in Uttarakhand aimed at preserving the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Char Dham pilgrimage, while enhancing accessibility and convenience for devotees. These include infrastructural development, increased temple seating capacity, new pathways, clean drinking water facilities, improved sanitation, medical services, enhanced security, and guide assistance.

“In the midst of the ongoing transformation and development of Uttarakhand, our effort is to preserve the spiritual and cultural heritage of these places while making the pilgrimage more accessible and convenient for devotees. The reconstruction work in Kedarnath and the development of Badrinath are proceeding rapidly,” he stated.

The Prime Minister detailed key facilities provided in Kedarnath for devotees:

  • Increased Seating Capacity: The temple’s seating capacity has been significantly expanded to accommodate more devotees concurrently during prayers and darshan.
  • Improved Access and Approach: Road repairs and new pathways, including walking paths and ramps, have been constructed to ease access to the temple.
  • Drinking Water and Sanitation: Clean drinking water facilities and additional public toilets have been installed to ensure hygiene and convenience.
  • Medical Facilities: Emergency medical services, first-aid centres, and basic healthcare facilities are available to address pilgrims’ health needs.
  • Resting Places and Shelters: Numerous resting sheds and shelters along the pilgrimage route provide respite from adverse weather conditions.
  • Information and Guide Services: Information centres and guide services assist pilgrims with navigation, temple timings, and other essential details.
  • Improved Lighting and Security: Enhanced lighting and increased security personnel ensure safety and comfort, particularly during early mornings and late evenings.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Regular cleaning drives maintain the temple premises and surroundings, preserving the sacred environment.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to making the pilgrimage a memorable and comfortable experience, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to those involved in these developments and extended a warm welcome to all pilgrims.

“These facilities are just a glimpse of our commitment to making the pilgrimage a memorable and comfortable experience for all. We believe that a smooth and well-supported journey enhances the spiritual experience. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those involved in making these improvements possible. We look forward to welcoming you to the divine abode of Baba Kedar,” he concluded.
